Study Tools: Mind Maps

Mind mapping is a clever way to put your thoughts on a piece of paper. You can read more about mind mapping at Wikipedia. The Chinese Wikipedia article is rather short. The English Wikipedia article is better.

There are many free mind mapping programs. Choose one that works for you. Don't be afraid of a new computer program. If you practice enough times, you will become a computer wizard. People will ask you to be their teacher!

Don't be a computer slave. Each program works for YOU on YOUR computer. Play with it [= try this, try that] until you feel comfortable.

Here are a few suggestions for making good mind maps.

1. Don't just copy other people's mind maps. Learn good ideas from them, but do things YOUR way.

2. Start in the middle with a key word and a picture .

3. Use colors for pictures, words and lines. Your colors should have a special meaning (green = good, red = bad, OR green = people, red = animals, blue = plants etc.). Colors will help you remember better.

4. Use symbols wherever you can. Don't just use the same boring symbols (;-) as your friends. Try new ones or make up your own symbols (BETTER!)

5. Don't write long sentences. Only use key words or phrases. Remember to write your words in different colors.
